The Best Ways to Keep Your Campervan Warm During Winter
On August 20, 2020 by BabilessThe days are getting much colder, but don’t let that put you off heading out in your camper for a winter adventure! There are many ways to prepare your camper to keep you warm and cosy, even when it’s cold outside. Here are our top tips to keep your camper warm this winter.
1. Insulate Your Camper
The single most important thing to do in order to keep your camper warm is make sure it is well insulated. Campers have thin walls, so without adequate insulation you will lose a lot of heat fast. Basically any parts of your camper that can be accessed without damaging should be insulated.
Some of the best types of insulation for campers and caravans are:
- Rigid Board Panels such as Foilboard and XPS Insulation are excellent for the roof, underfloor, walls and retrofit.
- Glasswool Insulation is particularly good for hard to reach gaps as it can be easily compressed and cut to fit gaps.
- Double sided reflective foil insulation is a good choice for the roof, walls and floors.
The good thing about installing insulation is that you’re not only investing for the winter months, but you’ll stay cooler in summer too. What’s more insulation, particularly acoustic insulation, can help reduce noise transfer into and out of your camper. Insulation products from some brands, such as Kingspan Insulation, can help prevent condensation and moisture build up.
2. Don’t Forget the Windows
Camper windows are often responsible for a lot of heat loss, so it’s important to pay them some attention. If you have the budget, replacing your windows with dual pane windows is a good move. Dual pane windows have two layers of glass with a layer of air trapped between them. This design helps resist heat flow to keep that warm air inside of your camper.
If you don’t have the budget to replace your windows, try using window coverings. There are so many choices. One option is to use bubble wrap or foam insulation boards in addition to heavy thermal curtains. During the day when the sun is shining, leave your windows uncovered to soak up some natural warmth. Once the sun goes down, set up your window coverings to keep the warm air inside.
3. Vent Covers
Proper ventilation in a camper is essential, however an uncovered vent can ruin all your efforts to keep the camper warm. By using a vent cover, you can make a big reduction in heat loss. Vents can be covered externally using a roof vent cover. Internally, you should make sure your vents are well insulated by using a foam vent cover. This can easily be taken off when you need to use your vents again.
4. Heaters
Once your camper is well insulated, a heater can be really effective at keeping the inside temperature nice and warm. There are camper-friendly heaters of all types, just make sure you consider the safety features before deciding which is best for you.
Stay warm and enjoy your camping this winter!
